Abstract

The appearance of female breast in western culture has always to do with femininity and it has remarkable psychological and sexual meaning. Breast augmentation improves self-confidence and quality of life.

Breast augmentation can be accomplished in three ways:

1. A silicone gel-filled implant is inserted surgically through an incision in the armpit. The implant is normally placed below the chest muscle (pectoralis major). The small scars are easily hidden in the armpit. The operation is accomplished under general anesthesia.

2. A silicone implant is inserted through an incision around the areola (the pink skin surrounding the nipple). The implant is placed in the pocket between the muscle and the breast tissue.

3. A silicone implant is inserted through an incision under the breast, following the natural crease of the breast making the scar almost invisible.

All these operations are accomplished under general anesthesia. The operations take 1 to 3 hours to complete, and the patient can normally go home the following day.

Breast reduction

Breast reduction involves removing a suitable amount of excess breast tissue and skin, repositioning the nipple and areola, and reshaping the remaining breast tissue. The operation is accomplished under general anesthesia. You should wear a supporting bra for at least 3 months after the operation ( also read patient information ). Areas around the incisions must be kept dry for 10 days. Stitches should be removed appr. 2 weeks after the operation.

Breast lift

In breast lift operation the plastic surgeon relocates the nipple and areola to a higher position, repositions the breast tissue to a higher level, removes excess skin from the lower portion of the breast, and reshapes the remaining breast skin. The operation is accomplished under general anesthesia ( also read patient information ). Areas around the incisions must be kept dry for 10 days. Stitches should be removed appr. 2 weeks after the operation.

Breast augmentation and lift

This operation is suitable for women with small and sagging breast. Incision is made into the natural crease under the breast or around the areola, depending on the need to lift the nipple or not. Breast lift is done with internal supporting sutures and placing the implant.
